My take on coaching a team

Some quick thoughts on coaching a team:

  • give people clear ownership and get out of the way
  • give people room to stretch outside that area of ownership, so they can develop new skills and don’t get “typecast”
  • Give the team upward visibility - don’t hog the spotlight
  • Solicit 360 feedback so you can give better coaching than from your observations alone
  • Meet people on their terms. Some people want to digest feedback before talking about it (communicate feedback in writing in advance), others don’t like to let things stew (give feedback in person so you can work through it together live)
  • Encourage the team to work through issues themselves if possible, and only pull you in to work through disagreements they can’t solve themselves
